Creative writing has many benefits for children beyond improving writing skills.

  • It helps them to practise using their imaginations. In a world filled with digital distractions and instant answers, creative writing offers a space where children can dream, invent and wonder. There is a unique kind of joy that arrives in a group of children who are absorbed in writing a story or poem.

  • It provides a safe place to explore and express feelings. Writing is a quiet, still activity that is calming. Children learn empathy by imagining what it would be like to be someone else.

  • Self confidence develops when children read and hear their unique writing voice. They become more willing to engage with writing activities and share their ideas.

  • Cognitive and language skills are enriched through creative writing. Children expand their vocabulary, improve spelling and grammar and learn planning and problem solving skills.
